HEBREW WRITING STYLES IN THE BOOK OF MORMON
Our attention needs to
be heightened when we are presented with a Hebrew writing style used in the Old
Testament, New Testament and The Book of Mormon, which is known as “Flag Phrases”.
Repetition of them is a means for the authors to highlight the importance of
the experience they are writing about, Flag phrases include repetition of words
or phrases such as: “look”, “yea”, “behold”, “even”, “verily”, and “it came to
pass”. There are many more, but for the sake of this exercise I will focus on
three of these.
“It came to pass”: It means something now exists, which did not
previously or something new has happened or changed. According to
latterdaysaintmag.com this phrase is one of the most significant in the Book of
Mormon. In 3 Nephi 11 many verses are enriched with this phrase bringing pause
and highlight the truths which follow.
“Verily, verily”:
This was often used by Jesus Christ and means in truth or as a matter of fact,
reality or truth.
“Behold”: This
is derived from the Greek word “eido”, which literally means “be sure to see”.
In this week’s reading
of 3 Nephi chapters 11-18 I selected the following three teachings from Jesus
Christ:
1. Found in 3 Nephi 11:11- “I am the light and
life of the world”. Jesus Christ suffered for my sins, for the world’s sins,
under the will of our Heavenly Father, and He did all this to provide a way for
us to have eternal life through the repentance process.
2. Found in 3 Nephi 11:21-35: The law of Baptism
is introduced. The means and the methods of immersion in water and the
importance of receiving the Holy Ghost.
3.
Found
in 3 Nephi 18:7- The practice
of Sacrament and the importance of “always remember me ye have my Spirit to be
with you”. This is the event I would have loved to have been at. This event was
the precursor and the crowning event of Jesus Christ’s gospel and the means and
method it would roll forth across the face of the earth for time and all
eternity.
