HEBREW WRITING STYLES IN THE BOOK OF MORMON Our attention needs to be heightened when we are presented with a Hebrew writing style used in the Old Testament, New Testament and The Book of Mormon, which is known as “Flag Phrases”. Repetition of them is a means for the authors to highlight the importance of the experience they are writing about, Flag phrases include repetition of words or phrases such as: “look”, “yea”, “behold”, “even”, “verily”, and “it came to pass”. There are many more, but for the sake of this exercise I will focus on three of these. “It came to pass” : It means something now exists, which did not previously or something new has happened or changed. According to latterdaysaintmag.com this phrase is one of the most significant in the Book of Mormon. In 3 Nephi 11 many verses are enriched with this phrase bringing pause and highlight the truths which follow. “ Verily, verily” : This was often used by Jesus Christ and means in truth or as a matter of fact, re...

I got hacked!

So, Tuesday 26 September 2023, saw me waging a two hour war with a hacker, trying to gain access to my Facebook account, and his eventual winning. So very frustrating. My fault, I stupidly shared a FB code, to another friend, who had been hacked, hereby giving the gremlin access to mine. Why, I cry in tears, so frustrated and sad to be losing about 15 years of history, as shared on the social media platform. With my holey memory, there were wonderful days when reminders of days past popped up. I am looking at this loss and thinking, what can I learn. There is a reason it is gone. What is it and how can I turn this into a positive? All I know right now is, I am missing it. Why? Not working, it was a touchpoint into the world outside my four walls here. Please note I did not say "the real world", because generally one cannot view what goes on there as real. But it is a welcome break from ones surrounding reality, when that reality is where you spend 24/24 hours, usually. The w...

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST

Image
A question I ask people when I am assisting them, "How strong is your faith?". People I have been led to help, through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, are always deeply faithful people. Many of them are not members of the same church as me, but we all pray to the same God and all Christians are worshipping the same Jesus Christ.  Imagine all the good that would be accomplished in the world if we all united in one faith. I believe, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is His true church restored once again, after the apostasy, as spoken of in the bible. Here is the testimony of my faith in Jesus Christ and why it is partnered with my faithful membership of His church.  1. I know we were created by a loving Heavenly Father, and we have a Heavenly Mother. 2. We were all spirit children pre-mortal existence and there was a war in Heaven. satan wanted there to be no retribution for any wrongdoing. We must just do as we want and all will be well. Jesus Christ was wil...

Great Parenting with Emotional Coaching

Image
For the final edition on good parenting tips for parents who want to be THE BEST!  I am going to speak on Emotional Coaching, which was made famous by a renowned psychologist Dr Gottman. . Please watch and learn from Dr Gottman in this interview:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmsDTT3xgjo . It is very difficult to control our natural emotions. We are going to get angry. We are going to get frustrated. We are going to want to lash out. BUT we cannot and must not do this. We have nine months to try and prepare ourselves for this new little being, who will come in and add to our earthly experience. Use that time well. We have a lifetime to raise them in love and kindness. Make a conscious decision on how you are going to parent. If you are fortunate enough to be in a loving marriage, sit and discuss with your partner the ins and outs, the dos and don'ts. Be prepared for the shifting sands of a maturing person and know you need to adjust as they grow. If you are on your ow...

How to spare the rod and NOT spoil the child!

Image
How to spare the rod and NOT spoil the child. I want to share a story with you which was told by Astrid Lingren, the Swedish author of Piepie Longstocking. This was in the '70s when hitting a child was the norm in her home country, but she had been told by a pastor's wife, to never spank her child. Her son had reached four-years-old, and until this stage, she had never felt he had behaved so badly she needed to spank him.  But, on this occasion, he had pushed too far, and it was time. As was the practice in those days, you sent the child out to find a switch (a piece of a branch).  He was gone for a very long time, and she had begun to wonder where he was when he came into the room with tears rolling down his face and his arm outstretched with a rock in it, and he said to her, "Mama, I couldn't find a switch, but here is a rock you can throw at me." She understood from a child's point of view: "If my mother wants to hurt me, then it makes no difference ...

Can you learn to be a great parent?

Image
Can you learn to be a great parent? Many would argue NO, because the parent style you were reared with, will become your dominant style, no matter what you try and do to change it! BUT many of the experts will answer YES! If you want to do something and change the way you behave- You absolutely can do it! In America, they have a wonderful system called the NEPEM system. This is the National Extension Parent Educational Model. This has been developed to educate parents to become successful in raising well-developed, emotionally secure children. They have this to say about nurturing: "To Nurture children may be the most important contribution parents can offer their children. Nurturing by parents predicts that a child will develop into a competent and healthy adult. Nurturing can be challenging because a family’s emotional resources often are overextended. Children also have different needs and different preferences for nurturing behaviour. By learning to attend to their children’s...

TESOL Week 7 Culture and Psychology

Image
Of course, culture and psychology are closely entwined. Your make-up, which consists of your upbringing (culture) will define the way you operate in life. This includes your IQ (intelligence quotient), EQ (emotional intelligence), PQ (physical intelligence) and your SQ (spiritual intelligence). There is a new one which has been added AQ=adversity intelligence. Let me summarise the indicators of a clear mind, a whole person, a well-rounded individual: IQ= it is your intelligence test score, as per a written exam. EQ= it is a measure of your interpersonal and communication skills. PQ= Ability to listen, identify and respond to one's internal messages about your physical self wrt weight, fitness and diet. SQ= The ability to behave with wisdom and compassion while maintaining inner and outer peace. Now I could waffle on for hours about psychology and what makes one tick, but for the essence of this blog, I am focussing on CULTURE and one's psychology and how it would apply...
